Our Thanksgiving Jubilee: 150 Years of Faith & Mission
This year’s Thanksgiving Harvest is extra special as we celebrate 150 years of God’s unwavering faithfulness. Our parish has been blessed in ways that are both personal and historic—and we’re giving thanks for every moment of this incredible journey. Rejoicing in our 150th Jubilee, we are deeply grateful for the countless blessings the Lord has mightily poured out upon St. Antoninus Church since our founding in 1875. These blessings have shaped us into who we are today: boldly Catholic, Spirit-filled, and beautifully culturally diverse—a loving community united in worship and mission. This Jubilee is not just about looking back—it’s about honoring the foundation that brought us here. We give thanks and praise to God, the Lord of the Harvest, for all that He has done in and through our parish throughout the generations. Below are some interesting historical information and photos : In 1875, Bishop Michael Corrigan invited Dominican Father Stephen Byrne to establish a parish in Newark. With approval from Rome, Byrne founded St. Antoninus Church in a rented Bank Street building, where the first Mass was celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, May 16, 1875. Later that year, Byrne purchased land on South Orange Avenue, converted a barn into a chapel, and named it after St. Antoninus . Dedicated by Bishop Corrigan on July 18, 1875, the parish quickly became a center for prayer, missions, and preaching, though it began with only about 100 families.
By the early 1900s, the parish had outgrown its small chapel. Under Prior Thomas Louis Power, a new rectory was planned and built, with its cornerstone laid in 1905 and dedication in 1906, marking the beginning of a new era for the parish. In April 1911, under Father Heffernan, construction began on a grand French-Gothic style church on S. Orange Ave, though only the basement could be built due to cost. With a temporary roof added, Bishop John J. O’Connor laid the cornerstone on May 12, 1912, and later dedicated the lower church on Rosary Sunday, October 6, 1912.
